Stonehenge is one of the most known historical places in England. Though so very famous, this prehistoric monument is covered up in mystery. In fact, it is still not known why the stones have been placed there and why this way.

It is located in Wiltshire, England. This is its address: Amesbury, Wiltshire SP4 7DE.

The stones are enormous and are placed in circles. There emplacement in this way dates from the megalithic period. The monument of Stonehenge was built in three phases between 3000 and 1500 years BC. It is not known why the stones have been placed in circles. Some historian presume, it is related to the observation of the sun and of the moon.

The name Stonehenge comes from "hanging stones".

  • In total, there are 83 stones.
  • The two types of stone used where the big sarsens and the smaller bluestones. The sarsens weigh up to 50 tonnes and they originally come from the Marlborough Downs, 35 Km (around 20 miles) north of Stonehenge.
